Waxing, sugaring, laser – methods for permanent hair removal

Those who want permanently smooth skin are often frustrated by how quickly the stubble returns after shaving. But there is help! The following hair removal methods offer you more permanent results:

  • Waxing
  • Sugaring
  • Laser and IPL

We should tell you one thing up front: There is actually no such thing as permanent, lifelong hair removal. With waxing and sugaring, the hair comes back after a few weeks. Even with laser treatments, it is often the case that annual refresher treatments are necessary or individual hairs need to be removed with a razor, waxing or sugaring.

Nevertheless, all of these methods offer you a remedy if you have had enough of reaching for the blade or the smell of depilatory creams.

Waxing: Hair removal with wax

Waxing allows you to effectively remove your hair for a longer period of time than shaving. Waxing is a classic hair removal method.

How waxing works

Waxing is, as the name suggests, hair removal with wax. The principle behind it is simple: wax is applied to the areas of the body where hair is to be removed. Then you have to be brave, because the wax is pulled off the skin against the direction of hair growth, thus removing the hair.

You can use cold or warm wax for waxing. The former is also suitable for use at home. Warm waxing is best left to experts. Incorrect use can result in painful burns to the skin. The trained hands of professionals can also carry out waxing faster than you can at home.

Advantages of hair removal with waxing

Waxing is effective, but many people find it painful. Over time, you and your skin can get used to it. At least the tugging is worth it, because the results are impressive!

The results of waxing last up to six weeks, depending on the skin and hair type. With regular use, the hair will grow back thinner over time.

Sugaring: Gentle hair removal with sugar

Sugaring is a hair removal method with a long tradition. Even Cleopatra is said to have used them.

How sugaring works

Similar to waxing, sugaring uses a sticky substance to remove the hair. However, this method is much gentler and also suitable for sensitive skin.

Sugaring uses a 100% natural and vegan paste made from sugar, water and lemon juice. This is applied to the skin at room temperature and then pulled off quickly.

Advantages of hair removal with sugaring

The advantage of sugaring is that the sugar only bonds with the hair. The skin is spared except for the removal of dead skin cells. This makes the process much less painful than waxing.

With regular use of sugaring, the hair grows back softer and thinner over time. The results of sugaring last around four to six weeks, usually a little longer than with waxing. Sugaring is suitable for all skin and hair types.

Other hair removal methods

If you want permanently smooth skin, you can also use other methods such as:

  • Epilation
  • Laser
  • IPL and SHR

Hair removal with these methods usually lasts longer than with waxing or sugaring. However, these treatments also take longer and are sometimes more expensive than conventional hair removal methods such as waxing or sugaring.

Epilating: Hair removal with a device

Epilation is a common method for hair removal at home. An epilator works on a similar principle to waxing and sugaring. The hair is usually pulled out together with the root and removed. However, this can often result in broken and ingrown hairs.

While waxing and sugaring make short work of removing hair, hair removal takes a little longer with epilation because the hair is removed piece by piece.

Epilation can cause redness on sensitive skin. The process is rewarded with smooth skin for about a month.

Please note: Many people find epilators painful. If you are not sure whether epilating is the right method for you, you can do an epilator test. Imagine that the hair on your legs, for example, is gradually removed with tweezers. If you feel you can cope with this, epilating may be a suitable method of hair removal for you. If you are not sure, waxing and sugaring can be much more comfortable for you. Here, too, there is a tugging sensation, but the pain is quickly over again according to the “close your eyes and go” principle.

Laser: High-tech for hair removal

If you really want permanently smooth, hair-free skin, it is best to use technologically advanced hair removal methods. Lasers remove hair permanently, sometimes for several years.

In laser hair removal, the laser beams send light at a specific wavelength to the hair roots. There, the energy from the laser is converted into heat. This leads to the hair follicle becoming desolate. The hair dies after a laser treatment. In most cases, a new hair root does not form.

IPL and SHR: light pulses for hair removal

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and SHR (Super Hair Removal) also remove hair with light. However, these are not lasers, but light pulses. IPL devices send several flashes or pulses of light per second into the depths of the hair roots. There, the light impulse turns into heat and the hair root is scorched. The hair then falls out over a period of three to twenty days. The result lasts for several years.

The SHR method is similar. However, instead of intensive light pulses as with IPL, several gentle light pulses are applied to the same area.

Laser, IPL hair removal and SHR work best on dark hair on light skin. White or light-colored hair is less suitable for laser treatments. The same applies to dark skin.

With laser, IPL and SHR, you should bear in mind that these treatments are time-consuming and expensive. The body can only be worked through piece by piece. In addition, only existing hair can be treated, which means that several sessions at intervals of a few weeks are necessary. IPL hair removal is best suited for people with sensitive skin or low pain tolerance. Both methods offer long-term results.

Sugaring as the best method of permanent hair removal

Compared to the hair removal methods mentioned above, sugaring offers you the most advantages. Hair removal with sugar is much gentler than waxing or epilating and leaves the skin feeling pleasantly soft for several weeks. Hair removal with sugaring is also particularly suitable if you are still unsure whether you want to take the step to laser or IPL hair removal.
